Exploring the Impact of AI Technology on Video Production

Are you curious about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in video production? So am I. While new breakthroughs seem to be happening weekly in the world of AI, it's tough to put a finger on where it all lands in the world of video production and animation. With that being said, AI-powered tools are becoming increasingly common in the film and video industry, offering numerous benefits and drawbacks to video production companies, and I'll do my best to explain where I think the current climate is at.

Benefits of Video Production and AI

One significant advantage of AI in video production that I see is its ability to automate tedious tasks. AI-powered tools can do things like transcribe video and repair audio, saving time and resources for human editors. Additionally, there are AI tools that can improve the quality of video content by reducing noise or improving lighting, resulting in a more polished final product. There are also some tools out there that can analyze footage and even supposedly edit b-roll for you, but I have yet to see any actual products that do this in a way that will replace humans any time soon.

A second benefit of AI in video production is its ability to help create a starting point for a script. You can input your idea into ChatGPT, and tell it to create a video script in the tone you are looking for, and it will create a basic structure for you to work from. To me, this has been one of the most beneficial outcomes of AI in video production so far. It just helps you get going for creating a script so you aren't wasting time trying to figure out where to start.

There is also the partially new release of Sora, OpenAI's footage creator. The footage looks very convincing, and can potentially be used as a stock footage substitute. If you need a drone shot of an object or city, Sora could be a viable way to get that footage, rather than hire a drone operator for the shot. This AI benefit still has a way to go though. Compared to where we were a year ago with this technology, I believe it really will be no time until AI starts producing completely convincing footage.

Another aspect of using AI, which I'm categorizing as a benefit, but could also be a drawback, is that AI can be cost-effective for production companies. AI-powered tools can potentially perform tasks that traditionally require a team of people, reducing the need for a large production team and lowering production costs. As I said above, AI isn't taking over anyone's job quite yet, but I can see it aiding in aspects like copywriting, storyboarding, audio touch-ups, and other industries along those lines...

Drawbacks of Video Production and AI

One significant drawback of AI in video production is its dependence on data. Video production requires traits such as human experience and human taste, so I think AI will have trouble replicating that perfectly. AI requires vast amounts of data to learn and improve, which can be a challenge if the data is incomplete, biased, or just doesn't have that literal "human touch".

Additionally, going along with what I just mentioned, AI may struggle with tasks that require creativity, such as developing a unique concept or script. While AI can automate many repetitive tasks, it may lack the imagination required to generate innovative ideas. I do feel that it can help get us to a starting point of creation, but it won't output a final deliverable without the crafting of humans.

Furthermore, there are ethical concerns around the use of AI in video production. For example, there are concerns about using deepfakes, which can spread misinformation and create misleading videos. I'm sure we've all seen at least one of these by now. They are close, but our eyes can still tell that something is a little off, the uncanny valley effect (when you can still tell that a robot acting like a human is a robot and not an actual human). The more AI develops, the more we might not be able to tell the difference.

Finally, the use of AI-powered tools in video production requires advanced technology, which can be expensive and inaccessible to smaller production companies. There are accessible tools like ChatGPT and CrumplePop, but when it comes to major computing and large-scale productions, then it can potentially be out of reach to someone without a major budget.

Conclusion for AI Technology in video production

While AI offers numerous benefits to video production companies, it also has significant drawbacks that must be considered. It's important to ensure that the AI is trained with unbiased data and that ethical considerations are taken into account to prevent perpetuating bias or creating misleading content.

Additionally, human creativity and imagination are still essential in video production, and AI should be used to enhance, rather than replace, the human element of video production.
